Blessings Across Long Island is a volunteer-driven initiative under the national nonprofit Blessings in a Backpack, dedicated to combating weekend hunger among school-aged children. Originating in 2013 as the Longwood chapter, the program began by providing weekend food packs to 50 children and has since expanded to serve over 500 students across all five elementary schools in the Longwood Central School District. Recognizing the broader need, the initiative rebranded in 2024 as Blessings Across Long Island, aiming to extend its reach to additional districts, including William Floyd, Sachem, and Hempstead. The organization's goal is to feed 1,100 children weekly by January 2025 and 3,000 by September 2027, relying entirely on community donations and volunteer support to bridge the weekend nutrition gap for food-insecure children.
